Welcome to the Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Literatures!

Established in 1962, the Slavic Department is dedicated to the teaching of the languages, literatures and cultures of the various East European nations and peoples. We are proud to offer a wide variety of courses, from introductory language courses to specialized graduate seminars. Our nationally and internationally recognized faculty members guide students of all levels in their pursuit to understand the rich cultures and languages of the region.

Every year we offer language training in Russian (1st-4th year), Czech (1st-2nd year), Hungarian, Polish (1st-2nd year), Romanian, Serbo-Croatian (1st-2nd year), and Uzbek; we also periodically offer 3rd-year Serbo-Croatian, as well as Old Church Slavonic (beginning and advanced), Bulgarian, and Ukrainian. We also sponsor summer language programs in Olomouc, Czech Republic, and Tomsk, Russia.

The Slavic Department is also pleased to offer a great variety of courses in literature, film, culture, folklore, and linguistics. Our undergraduate students can pursue a major or minor in Russian, or a minor in Slavic and East European Studies. (Personalized study majors in Slavic are also possible.) Recent graduates have pursued careers in a number of fields, including business, education, government, journalism, and law.

The Department is also pleased to offer M.A. and Ph.D. programs in both Slavic Linguistics and Russian Literature. Our graduate curriculum gives students flexibility to develop specialized scholarly interests from the start of their study. Students of all levels are very fortunate to be part of a rich Ohio State community supporting excellence in Slavic studies, which includes the Center for Slavic and East European Studies, the East European and Slavic Library, the Hilandar Research Library/Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies, and other Resources.
