Office hours: After class and by appointment
I am certainly glad to see that you have not been discouraged by the complexity of Hungarian grammar and the non-Latin based vocabulary, and are ready to continue your journey into new realms of this beautiful and fascinating language. The tricks that helped you to successfully complete 101 remain the same: I can't stress it enough, how very important it is that you devote time to your Hungarian studies every day. It is the University's (and my) expectation that each student spend at least TWO hours outside of class for every credit hour. Since this is a five credit hour course, you should expect to spend a minimum of TEN (10) hours each week in addition to class time. Seize every chance to practice the language outside the classroom environment. Making an appointment with me provides an excellent opportunity for that! As before, don't hesitate to call me with any questions you have between our class meetings.
Remember to review continuously. There will be lots of new vocabulary and more complex grammatical constructions in 102 and we will not always have time for the systematic review of previously learned materials. If you make an effort to keep the 101 materials fresh in your mind, it will be much much easier to incorporate the new stuff and the progress you will be making will be tremendously motivating. Don't forget, your success in this class depends entirely on the amount of effort you yourself invest into it.
Audio Tapes:
The textbook is accompanied by two cassette tapes, which contain the recording of all the dialogs and some of the oral exercises. I encourage you to take maximum advantage of this additional listening opportunity.
Other materials:
Additional exercises, grammar explanations and vocabulary lists can be accessed through Carmen.
2. Quizzes
Similarly to 101, there will be a short quiz every Wednesday, which will test vocabulary, grammatical structures and communicative skills. The quizzes will be cumulative. There will be no make-ups for missed vocabulary quizzes. Out of ten quiz grades, eight will be counted toward your final grade.
3. Presentation
You will be required to give an oral report in the second half of the quarter. Topic to be announced later.
4. Final exam
There will be a comprehensive oral final examination in the form of a 15-minute one on one conversation with me. You will be expected to be able to use the entire range of grammar and vocabulary studied since September.
