The Serbo-Croatian Language Program

"Serbo-Croatian" is a South Slavic Language, which is spoken (with many notable varieties) among the peoples of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia and Montenegro. Therefore, by studying it here in the Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Literatures at the Ohio State University, one is actually exposed to many languages, cultures, and countries.

Serbo-Croatian is the official title of language instruction at the Ohio State University, however it is known by many different names:

  • In the United States the language is now known as Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian.
  • In Croatia the language is known as Croatian.
  • In Bosnia and Herzegovina the language is known as Bosnian.
  • In Serbia and Montenegro the language is known as Serbian.

Why Learn Serbo-Croatian?

As unique as it is, Serbo-Croatian allows one to travel through a large part of the Balkan Peninsula and communicate with people who, among other things, are proud of their history, culture, and their language. Because of its unique position at the crossroads of trade, cultures, and indeed civilizations, a great abundance of traditions and cultures have formed from the region, making it an exciting part of the world to study. Countries in this region of the world are a cross between East and West, and welcome all with a curious combination of these elements.

Serbo-Croatian attracts a wide variety of students from all disciplines and all ages. Learning Serbo-Croatian opens up many opportunities for research, business, non-profit work, government positions, and many others. The only one quality that students of Serbo-Croatian must have is an interest in the language and region!

And, don't forget, Serbo-Croatian can be used towards a Minor in Slavic and East European Studies!
