As we moved through 2022 and into 2023, more of our events returned in their pre-pandemic form. Students and faculty alike were overjoyed at being able to regularly participate in events outside of the classroom. Some of our highlights include:
The 2022 Naylor Memorial Lecture featured Dr. Andrey N. Sobolev (Russian Academy of Sciences & Philipps-University of Marburg), who presented “Torlak in the Slavic Family and Balkan Sprachbund: Linguistic Problems and Methodological Challenges.”
The 2022 Kalbouss Innovative Approaches to Slavic Cultural Studies Lecture featured Dr. Colleen McQuillen (University of Southern California), who presented "Mikhail Zenkevich’s 'Voice of Matter': Poetry and Paleontology in the Era of Russian Modernism." Prior to the talk, several SEELC faculty shared their memories of Dr. George Kalbouss, who passed away in 2020.
The 2022 Oulanoff Memorial Lecture, "The National, the International, and the Supranational in Russian Poetry", was given by Dr. Michael Wachtel (Princeton University).
The 2023 Kalbouss Innovative Approaches to Slavic Cultural Studies Lecture featured Dr. Tatiana Smorodinskaya (Middlebury College), who presented "Russian Literary Canon(s) and Teaching Russian Literature".
The 2023 Naylor Memorial Lecture featured Dr. Motoki Nomachi (University of Sapporo), who presented this year's lecture: "Avram Mrazović’s Linguistic Thought and the Question of Polyvalency in Church Slavic".
