The students here at the Slavic Department make us proud every day. Each semester, students show how their passion and hard work in this field can pay off in their studies and in their careers.
Randy Rowe defended his dissertation, Mediated Social Hierarchies and Gender & Sexuality in the Russian Federation, and was granted the PhD in May 2024; he continues to teach as an assistant professor of Russian at the University of Cincinnati;
ABD student Aleksandra Shubina has been featured in the Hagerty Hall Global Gallery for her dissertation research on animation in the film canons of the Soviet Union and countries of the Socialist bloc;
Liz McBean, who is also ABD and has been working at Boston University’s global education office, begins teaching Russian language, literature and culture at Bowdoin College in the fall;
Mykyta Tyshchenko completed his candidacy exams in autumn and is writing his dissertation on Ukrainian film; he will teach Ukrainian language in 2024-25;
Sofia Bachman also completed her candidacy exams and is headed this year to Poland on a prestigious Fulbright Student Research grant;
Siobhán Seigne, Enes Tastan, Michelle Verbitskaya, and Lejla Veskovic all completed their M.A. porfolios and advanced to the Ph.D. program;
Andrey Ridling is our first Russian for the Professions M.A. graduate—and he has chosen academia as his profession, enrolling this autumn in the Ph.D. program in our department;
- New students Jay Hadfield and Kelly Gallagher (MA/PhD program) as well as Adam Johnson and Eleanor Grazier (RFP program) were all awarded FLAS fellowships in summer and/or academic year 2024-25 to continue to improve their Russian language skills.
