"Writing the Black Atlantic in Imperial Russia.” Dr. Jennifer Wilson

Dr. Jennifer Wilson will give a talk entitled "Writing the Black Atlantic in Imperial Russia".

This talk will  profile Vol'noe obshchestvo [Free Society], an abolitionist literary society formed in late 18th-century Russia; and pay special attention to the specifics of the Russian language in shaping the society’s unique contributions to the global anti - slavery discourse. 

Dr.  Wilson specializes in 19th and 20th century Russian and comparative literature with an emphasis on the nexus of sexuality and radical political thought. She received her Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures from Princeton University in 2014 where she also earned a graduate certificate in Gender and Sexuality Studies. At Penn, she will focus on revising her dissertation, "Radical Chastity: The Politics of Abstinence in Late 19th Century Russian Literature," into a book manuscript. She was an associate scholar at the Penn Humanities Forum on “Sex” for the 2015-2016 academic year.

She is currently the postdoctoral Fellow for Academic Diversity (2015-2018) at University of Pennsylvania
