Kapustnik!
Last Wednesday, instructors and students of Slavic and East European languages got together once again to show off their language and acting skills at Kapustnik, a talent show that has long been a good tradition in the department. They performed skits, sang, and played authentic musical instruments. Of course, they did all that only after fortifying themselves with some Russian and Balkan-style snacks!
As always, the best performers were awarded some very delicious and authentic (!) prizes. And what can be a better prize than a large box of chocolates!
This time, first prize for language use went to two BCS groups who together performed a Dating Game skit, featuring, among others, a real vampire! First prize for talent went to Lynda Baker, a BCS student who played a traditional instrument.
The judges also recognized Joseph Grman, a Russian language student, for his beautiful accordion performance of the famous Russian romance Dark Eyes.
Izolda Wolski-Moskoff, the Polish language instructor, was awarded a special prize for her students’ performance of a Polish folk song that has inclusions of an old Russian song and that is very popular in…Japan!
All performances were really good. As one of the judges (Ceilidh Orr) said: Judging was really difficult this fall, because all of the acts were extremely high quality, including Katya [Katerina Rouzina] and Dusty's [Dusty Wilmes] performance of Alexandra from the film Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears.
