The Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures announces a new course offering, Politics of Language in Southeast Europe (Slavic 597)!

In an increasingly global world, how you speak says a lot about you -- where you are from, your socioeconomic class, maybe even your religion or your political views. This course will look at the social and political importance of language in Southeast Europe. This is an area of the world where language has played a key role in the formation of ethnic and religious identities. This course will look at the symbolic function of language in this area, and how social and political forces have played out through language at different points in history, and in different countries of Southeast Europe.

Prof. Andrea Sims is excited to teach the course for the first time in Spring 2012. Slavic 597 is open to advanced undergraduates and graduate students, and fulfills the Issues in the Contemporary World GEC requirement.
