The Ohio State University

Welcome back to campus! We hope you will join us for a fantastic year of study by enrolling in one of our many courses below.

Whether you want to study language, Cold War Spies and Russian Sci-fi, Slavic Vampires, or simply need to fulfill your GE requirements, you'll find what you need at the Slavic Department!

See Autumn Courses on our site, or find select courses below!

Language, Culture, and So Much More!

Our undergraduate classes are typically small by design, offering students of all backgrounds a more engaging experience, and preparing them to be informed citizens of a world that increasingly requires understanding of other languages and cultures.

Are you an undergrad who is thinking about majoring or minoring in Russian or Slavic? Our graduates find that their language skills and cultural knowledge have direct relevance to today's job market, and they have found meaningful positions in such fields as business, government, law, education and journalism. Check out the requirements for majoring or minoring.

Our graduate classes prepare students for careers as specialists in the areas of Slavic and East European languages, linguistics, literatures, cultures, and second language acquisition. Courses are designed to meet the needs of students in the M.A. and Ph.D. programs, but graduate students from other departments, including the Slavic Center, Linguistics, and Comparative Studies, also often find that courses in our department complement and enrich their programs of study. We welcome graduate students from across the university with appropriate academic backgrounds.

Outside the Classroom

In addition to regular coursework, undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to pursue self-paced language study, internships (with our faculty or outside organizations), study abroad programs, special projects, and thesis research... all for course credit. For more information about these opportunities, contact the Undergraduate Studies Chair, or talk to your advisor.

We also encourage students to get involved with extracurricular activities, including language tables, films, and kapustnik (our end-of-semester talent show). Some undergraduate classes offer extra credit for participation (ask your instructor for details). You do not need to be a major or minor to participate -- most events are open to everyone!
