On March 19, 2012, the Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures hosted the Ohio High School Olympiada of Spoken Russian. This competition is part of a national competition that was initiated in 1962 by the American Council of Teachers of Russian (ACTR). High school students participate in speaking and reading tasks that showcase their language prowess.

This year we hosted 11 students from Roy C. Start High School in Toledo, Ohio who have studied Russian for between 1-3 years. The winner of this year’s competition was Levia Warrick (shown on left). Congratulations to her on her stellar performance! We hope that she will have the chance to represent Ohio in the international competition in Moscow, Russia.

The organizers wish to thank all those who participated in the Olympiada as well as the judges (all graduate students in our department), without whom we could not have hosted this event. They also express their thanks to the Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures and the Center for Slavic and East European Studies for their support in organizing this event.
